Inspired by a trip to Carcavelos in Portugal where I saw the local surfers riding the waves, I decided to ask the surf schools if they had old boards that they couldn't use for surfing anymore that I might paint on.
Nuno, the owner of a surf school on the beach happened to have two boards that he would otherwise be throwing away and so I brought them back to Cascais that evening, my son Elijah helping me to carry them back home. Our clothes were covered in wax and dirt and seeing all the bumps and knocks in the boards I wasn't sure what the results would be.
After painting six surfboards I really appreciate all those little imperfections in that it makes those pieces of art extra special.
